Description
The Old Manse is a house dating from the early 19th century, constructed of painted rendered stone rubble with a slate roof and brick stacks at each end. Originally, it featured a principal room on each side of a central passage, but internal partitions have since been removed. The kitchen is located at the back of the right-hand room, while a staircase and utility room are found in an outshut at the rear of the left-hand room. The upper storey extends over a carriageway at the right end, which has been partitioned, likely in the early 20th century, to create a narrow passage.
The building is two storeys high with a three-window range. The 19th-century windows are mostly intact, featuring 16-paned hornless sashes, except for a 12-paned horned sash at the upper storey left end. The window above the carriage entrance has a flush sash box. The doorway is adorned with carved consoles that support a shallow hood and has a 20th-century door, while the carriage entrance has plank doors. The right end displays restricted quoins. At the rear upper storey, there are two early 19th-century three-light casements with rectangular leaded lights. The outshut contains a late 19th or early 20th-century window with five ogee-headed lights, and there is a semicircular-headed brick arch leading to the rear doorway.
The interior has undergone significant alterations in the late 20th century, including the removal of internal partitions, chimneypieces, and some two-panelled doors. There is an early 20th-century privy located at the rear of the passage adjoining the carriageway. The Old Manse is part of a group with the Old Church, which is adjacent to it on the left end and shares a continuous slate roof.
