Description
Gale Cottage and the house attached to the north are a former coaching inn, now divided into two houses. They date from the mid-18th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The east elevation was refronted in the mid-19th century, rendered, and lined out, while the north elevation is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble with slate lacing. The building features a hipped slate roof with crested ridge tiles, a stack on the left (south) side, and an external sandstone rubble stack with a rendered chimney on the right of the north elevation.
Gale Cottage is located on the left and includes a carriage entrance leading to an internal courtyard. The house to the right has been refronted with a canted bay window at the front and an entrance on the right side. Gale Cottage is two storeys tall, rendered, and has 20th-century PVC sash windows and a plain door, with two UPVC sashes on the first floor. The right side features double doors for carriage entry. The house to the north is three storeys high, with a canted bay window extending through all three storeys, featuring 20th-century PVC sashes and a modillion cornice. The north elevation includes a panelled door with a lion mask knocker in a raised 20th-century surround, and a 6-pane sash window to the right. The first floor has a paired 12-pane sash window to the right, and the second floor has a paired 9-pane sash window to the right. The interior is not accessible.
