Description

Malt Shovel Cottage is a house and cottage, now combined into a single dwelling, dating from the early 18th century, with later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of rendered rubblestone with a pantile roof, featuring a graduated stone slate course at the eaves. The main house section has two storeys and three bays, with a single-bay outbuilding extending from the right side under the same roof. To the left is a cottage, also two storeys high, with one bay. The central bay of the main house features a six-panel door set within a wide, moulded architrave, which is topped with a pulvinated frieze and a pediment. This is flanked by 20th-century tripartite sash windows with glazing bars. To the right of the right-hand bay is a board door leading to the outbuilding, which is set higher due to the sloping ground. The first floor of the main house has an original wide, moulded architrave above a six-pane sash window, and is flanked by sash windows with glazing bars. Full-height pilasters are located on either side of the door. The cottage projects slightly forward. It has a 20th-century door on the right side, and 20th-century casement windows. Shaped kneelers and stone coping are visible on either side of the cottage bay, as is a ridge stack. End stacks are also present on the main house.
