Description
Lyndale Cottage is a house located on the east side of Fore Street in Kingsand. It dates back to the early 17th century and was remodeled around 1750, with some later alterations. The building is constructed of rendered rubble and has an asbestos slate roof with a gable end stack on the left; the stack on the right gable end has been removed. Originally, the house had a through passage plan with rooms on either side and a staircase at the rear of the passage, along with a two-storey rear service wing that likely dates from the later 17th century. The partition walls in the passage have been removed.
The cottage has two storeys and an attic. On the ground floor, there are four-pane sash windows on both the right and left sides; the window on the left was once a doorway and now features a 6-pane sash with a segmental head. There is a 20th-century door located off-centre to the right. The first floor has two four-pane sashes and a central two-light raking dormer. The right side of the building has a battered wall.
Inside, there is an entrance to an inverted porch with fielded panelling and a half-glazed inner door. The front left room contains a 20th-century fireplace with cupboards on either side that have fielded panelled doors and H-hinges. The room on the right features a fine chimneypiece with a moulded architrave, torus moulding on the frieze, and two tiers of fretwork below the moulded mantel. This chimneypiece is similar in style to one found at Seaward on Garrett Street in Cawsand. On either side, there are elegant cupboards with segmental heads, foliage in fretwork, shaped shelves, and panelled lower doors.
A newel stair is located in a circular stair tower at the rear of the passage, featuring a small stair light that was originally unglazed and has a chamfered triangular head. On the first floor, there are two-panelled doors leading to the front rooms. The left room has panelled cupboards and a chimneypiece with a moulded architrave and mantel. The right room features an eared architrave on the chimneypiece with a Greek key frieze below the moulded mantel. The second floor has a five-bay roof with chamfered and crossed principal rafters, side-pegged collars with a pronounced camber, and two rows of through purlins. The roof is ceiled just below the apex of the trusses. In the rear wing on the first floor, there is a three-bay roof where only the feet of the principals are visible, and a door with battens and strap hinges.
