Description

The Halfway House Inn is a circa 1750 inn with a former stable attached to the rear, now used as living accommodation. It has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly to the interior. The building is constructed of rendered rubble with a slate hipped roof and a brick stack on the front slope. Originally designed with a double depth plan, featuring a room on either side of the entrance, the entrance has been repositioned to the left side of the front elevation on Garrett Street, with a further entrance on the right.

The building is three storeys high and has two windows on the front. The ground floor has a 20th-century embattled porch on the left, alongside a four-pane sash window and a two-pane light where a door previously stood. The first floor features four-pane sashes, while the second floor has a sixteen-pane sash with thick glazing bars, supported by a modillion cornice. The right side of the building has a chamfered wall corner, with four-pane sash windows and shutters at ground floor. The facade is two bays wide, presenting central double doors within a wooden porch and cornice.

Attached to the right is a two-storey former stable with two doors and two 20th-century windows on the ground floor, and two twelve-pane sashes at first floor. An addition in sandstone rubble extends to the end on the right, including an upper door and a single light. The interior has not been inspected.
