Description

Trenarren is a house built around 1740, with some alterations from the mid-19th century. It features a painted brick front and sandstone rubble on the sides, topped with a slate roof that has a ridge stack. The layout includes a central entrance leading to a passage, with principal rooms located to the front right and left, creating a double depth plan.

The house stands three storeys high with a symmetrical three-bay front. All windows are 12-pane sashes with thick glazing bars, except for a 4-pane sash on the ground floor to the right. There is a central 20th-century door, and both the first and second floors have a central bay with a blind window. The building is adorned with plain pilasters and cill bands at the first and second floors, along with a modillion cornice.

Inside, Trenarren retains exceptionally fine 18th-century features, although only partially inspected during the survey in January 1986. The ground floor front right room showcases complete fielded panelling with panelled shutters on the windows. The rear wall features a fireplace with an eared architrave, an interlaced Greek key frieze, and dentillation below a moulded mantel. There are panelled cupboards on either side with glazed six-pane upper doors and panelled lower doors. The room also has a moulded plaster cornice and a two-panelled fielded door, along with a 20th-century fireplace at the rear and cupboard recesses on both sides. Given the quality of the house, the staircase is likely to have good detailing, and there may be additional features in the passage and upper storeys.
