Description
Rock Cottage is a house built around 1820-1830, with some modern updates from the 20th century. It is constructed from local stone rubble with brick detailing and features slate-hung walls on the street side, while the garden side has had its plaster removed. The house has end and lateral stacks with brick chimney shafts and old chimney pots, topped with a slate roof.
The layout is double-depth and two rooms wide, with a central entrance passage that includes stairs leading to the front and back left rooms. The exterior is two storeys high and has a near-symmetrical three-window front, primarily featuring 12-pane sash windows. The right bay has an 8-pane sash window on the ground floor and a blind window on the first floor. The central round-headed doorway has a part-glazed six-panel door beneath a fanlight with glazing bars. There are signs of a previously removed gabled porch around the doorway, likely a later addition. The eaves are deep and supported by shaped timber brackets.
The right garden front, which was originally plastered, also has a three-window arrangement of 12-pane sashes, including a blind window in the centre on the ground floor. Low segmental brick arches are visible on this side. Inside, original features include an open-string staircase with stick balusters, panelled doors, and coved cornices in the main rooms. The original chimneypieces have been removed, and there is a cellar with external steps leading down from the rear, which has a brick vault. The roof has not been inspected.
