Description

Charterhouse Westward is a pair of attached houses built around 1780, with 19th and 20th-century alterations and additions. The exterior is rendered and lined out, topped with a hipped asbestos slate roof.

Westward, located on the left, has its entrance on the right, with rooms at the front and rear to the left. Charterhouse, on the right, features two front rooms and a central entrance leading to a double-depth plan. Both houses are three storeys high on a plinth, with a continuous modillion cornice. Westward has a 20th-century addition on the lower ground floor to the left, which includes a flat roof and a modern window. The entrance features a six-panelled fielded door with a pedimental hood to the right. On the first floor, there are two four-pane sash windows with segmental heads, and a twelve-pane sash window on the second floor.

Charterhouse has four-pane sash windows to the right and left of its six-panelled door, which is topped with a cornice on consoles. It also has two four-pane sash windows on both the first and second floors, with segmental heads at the ground floor right and first floor. The rear of the building has a central stack that heats both houses, along with four-pane sash windows on the first and second floors.

The interior of Charterhouse includes an entrance passage with dado panelling, a two-panelled door leading to a room at the rear left, and a dog-leg stair at the back of the passage. The rest of the interior, including Westward, has not been inspected but may still have other 18th-century features.
