Description
No 6 Market Street is a house that likely dates back to the 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th century and later. The building is constructed of painted sandstone rubble and features a slate and asbestos slate roof, with a brick gable stack on the left and a corner stack at the front right.
Originally, this may have been a single house that was later modified to create two cottages, each with one room. There are winder staircases located at the rear right of the room to the left and at the rear left of the room to the right. A short lateral corridor runs along the rear left, providing access to a door on the left side, while a central entrance serves the cottage on the right. The building is now used as a single house.
The structure has two storeys and three windows. On the ground floor, there are 16-pane sash windows on either side of a 6-panelled fielded door. The first floor features 12-pane sash windows on both sides, with a central blocked window and a 4-pane light. The left side of the building has a splayed wall, with a door featuring a segmental head on the left and a 12-pane sash window on the first floor to the left.
Inside, the central entrance leads to a step down into the room on the left, which contains a cupboard with strap hinges. The rear passage has a wide segmental arch in the rear wall, although its original purpose is uncertain. The staircase in the room to the right is adorned with vertical panelling and stick balusters.
