Description
No 4 South Street is a house that dates from the 18th century, with origins in the 17th century. It features a 19th-century rear outshut and various alterations. The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with brick dressings, and the front is colourwashed. It has a brick stack and a pantile roof, following a lobby entry plan. The house is two storeys high and has three symmetrical bays with quoins.
The early 19th-century doorcase includes pilasters that support a plain entablature, cornice, and hood, and it features a six-fielded panel door with the top two panels glazed. Below stucco flat arches, there are four-pane sash windows. The house has a central stack, an end stack to the right, and a lateral stack to the outshut. The left side has a part-glazed door in the reveal, and the first floor has a 12-pane A E B sliding sash window along with a datestone inscribed "1659," which is likely re-set. The pointed first-floor windows on the left and right returns of the outshut have glazing bars. Inside, the ceilings are beamed.
