Description

The Engine House at Gooninnes Mine, located in St Agnes, dates from the mid to late 19th century. It is constructed of killas rubble with granite dressings. The building features brick arches over most openings, with timber lintels elsewhere. A brick shaft rises to the upper stage of the chimney, which has a stepped collar, a stepped cornice, and an embattled top. The engine house has a rectangular plan and an external round chimney positioned at the rear left-hand corner. It stands three storeys tall with unaltered elevations and original openings. The front wall includes a central round-headed doorway, while the rear wall features a wide round-headed cylinder doorway and round-headed window openings on each floor above. The left-hand side has two openings spanned by timber lintels. The engine house currently has no machinery, floor, or roof structure. It is an important landmark in an unspoiled coastal valley.
