Description
The pump engine house, located on the site of the Gambler and St Aubyn Mine, is a derelict structure likely built in the late 19th century. It is constructed from granite and killas rubble, featuring granite quoins and a bob wall made of large dressed granite blocks. The window arches are made of brick, and there is a brick upper stage to the chimney, which is currently roofless. The building has a rectangular plan oriented east-west, with the bob wall on the east and a chimney attached at the south-west corner.
The structure consists of three stages set on a high plinth, with round-headed openings, including a driver's window in the bob wall and a large cylinder door in the rear wall, which has collapsed beneath it. There are two beam-holes between the second and third windows in the rear wall, along with some square-headed openings with timber lintels in both side walls. The tapered cylindrical chimney has a cornice and shows slight damage at the bottom, with some bricks missing near the top of the upper stage. At the time of the survey in 1988, much of the building was heavily covered in ivy. In front of the bob wall, there is a shaft protected by a long rectangular enclosure, lightly covered with chicken wire. The pump engine house stands as an impressive and conspicuous landmark in an isolated rural setting.
