Description
This is a terrace of 25 similar houses, with two incorporating shop fronts, built around 1830. The houses are constructed from roughly-coursed, dressed Killas stone with brick arches. The roofs are primarily of asbestos slate, though Nos 33 and 34 retain original grouted slate, with brick end stacks. The houses follow a double-depth plan, featuring a reception room at the front and a kitchen behind, with most having rear service wings and side entrance halls. Nos 43 and 50 have two rooms at the front with an entrance between, and there are through-passages on the left of No. 26 and between Nos 45 and 46. The terrace is two storeys high, with each house typically having a two-window range. No. 34 has a mid-19th century shop front featuring moulded pilasters and an original entablature with fascia, while No. 46 retains an older shop front. Most houses are arranged in pairs, with doorways centrally positioned, though some have doorways to one side. The doorways have a keyed round head, topped with a blind fanlight, except for Nos 31 (featuring a spoked fanlight), and No. 32 (containing glazed fanlights). No. 26 retains its original panelled door. The windows are mostly C19 or C20 sashes, with some C20 replacements in Nos 27, 32, 35, 40, 47, 48, 49 and 50. No. 30 has a blind window over the doorway, with painted glazing bars and margin panes. The interiors were not inspected. Daniell Street represents one of the best and most complete examples of an early 19th century planned terrace of small houses in the south-west.
