Description
Lander's Monument is a significant structure located in Truro, built in 1835 by Philip Sambell. The statue, created by sculptor Neville Northy Burnard in 1852, commemorates the achievements of the Lander brothers, Richard and John, particularly their discovery of the source of the River Niger in 1827. The monument also serves as a memorial to Richard Lander, who passed away during an expedition. The site was donated by Sir Charles Lemon and constructed by Bowden of Helston. The monument features a dressed granite fluted Doric column standing on a square ashlar plinth, topped with a carved statue of Richard Lander.
