Description
Southleigh is a town house, now converted into flats, built in 1833. The exterior features stucco on masonry with granite dressings on the main fronts, while the rest is made of local rubble. It has hipped dry Delabole slate roofs with wide eaves supported by paired brackets. The left-hand roof is behind a parapet with a moulded cornice, and there are cast-iron ogee gutters.
The building has a double-depth plan and is two storeys tall, with a south front that has a 1:1:1 fenestration pattern in a three-window range. The original tripartite sash windows, which include glazing bars, are set within granite architraves with granite mullions and are topped with moulded hoods. There are narrow windows to the left of the doorway that have later 4-pane sashes. The left-hand bay projects and features a central two-storey projection with two windows and quoin strips. The entrance has a Doric doorcase with fluted columns positioned in antis under the right-hand window.
The east front displays a 1:4 fenestration pattern and includes a two-storey canted bay on the left side. Other elevations have segmental brick arches or timber lintels above original or horned copy sashes with glazing bars. The interior has not been inspected but is expected to be of interest, and permission to take photographs or make notes within the grounds has been refused.
Additionally, there are high rubble garden walls, with the wall that connects at right angles to the south front of the house featuring original slate coping.
