Description

Mount Charles House, built in 1785, is now divided into three houses located on Infirmary Hill in Truro. The front of the building features textured incised stucco on rubble, while the rear of Nos. 2 and 3 has old slate hanging, with new slate hanging on the back of No. 3. No. 1 has scantle slate at the rear and dry slate at the front of No. 2, with the remainder covered in asbestos slate. The left side of No. 1 has a brick end stack, and there are two brick axial stacks. The front of Nos. 1 and 2 has cast-iron ogee gutters. The building has a double-depth plan and is two storeys high, with a window arrangement of 2:3:2. No. 2 features a shouldered and round-arched fanlight head with margin panes, while No. 3 has 20th-century windows, including a reproduction of the original canted oriel window at the right-hand end. No. 2 also has a central mid-19th century glazed porch with margin panes, panels, and an original Lion's head door knocker.

Inside, original features include an open-well open-string staircase with rare scrolled wrought-iron balusters and a ramped mahogany handrail. There is an enriched modillion plaster ceiling cornice above the stairs and a similar cornice in the best chamber of No. 3. Early 19th-century features such as door architraves with corner blocks and roundels, panelled doors, and some inspected plaster ceiling cornices are also present.
