Description
No. 55 Lemon Street is a small town house built in 1807 for Philip Gard. The front is made of granite ashlar, topped with an asbestos slate roof and featuring brick end stacks. The house has a double-depth plan with one room at the front and stands two storeys tall, with a two-window range on the front. It has a plinth and a round-arched doorway on the left, which includes a six-panel door and a spoked fanlight. Above the probably original hornless four-pane sashes, which have had their intermediate glazing bars removed, are shallow cambered arches with projecting keyblocks. The fascia has modillions, and there is a cast-iron ogee gutter.
Inside, the front room features a moulded plaster ceiling cornice and panelled shutters, while a dogleg stair is located behind it. During a survey in 1990, building work revealed that the party wall is constructed of cob, and the hall partition has stone nogging to its studwork.
