Description

No. 38 is a town house built in the early 19th century, featuring stuccoed elevations and a dry Delabole slate roof with a hipped angle on the left, along with stuccoed chimneys. It has a fairly deep plan and stands three storeys high on a corner site, with quoin strips on both fronts. The front facing Lemon Street has a one-window facade with a ground floor/basement doorway (now a window) in an open porch formed by a canted first-floor bay supported by thick square columns. This bay features sunk aprons, a broken parapet cornice, and horned sash windows with glazing bars, while the original second-floor window is a hornless sash with glazing bars. The Carclew Street front has a four-window range with original hornless sash windows with glazing bars, except for later horned sashes on the ground floor. There is an additional two-storey bay on the left with a doorway that has a moulded hood on consoles and a round-headed window above. On the right, a late 19th-century shop front includes terminal pilasters and consoles supporting a fascia with a moulded cornice; it features an original four-pane hornless sash shop window with arched lights on the left and a 20th-century shop window on the right. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest. The property also has original wrought-iron railings over the basement forecourt walls, including a gate to the basement steps on the left.
