Description

This is a terrace of four houses built around 1820. The front is brick, while the rear is constructed from local rubble stone. The roof is slate, with end and axial stacks. The terrace is three storeys high and consists of a central four-window range (covering numbers 39 and 40), a separately roofed three-window range to the left (number 38), and a slightly advanced block with a hipped roof to the right (number 41). The detailing is similar throughout the terrace. Number 38 has a central doorway with a six-panelled door, panelled rebates, and late 19th-century canted bay windows either side, all sheltered by a continuous pentice roof supported by chamfered posts. Above the doorway are 12-pane sash windows, with the lower panes painted over. The attic storey contains six-paned windows. Numbers 39 and 40 share paired entrances, with a four-panelled door to number 39, a part-glazed panelled door to number 40, and a similar door to the left in number 41. These doorways have elliptical heads and traceried fanlights. Flanking windows feature 12-pane sashes with flat arched, gauged brick heads. The upper windows throughout are similar, with six panes in the attic storey. A continuous painted sill band runs below the first-floor windows. An inscribed stone tablet on number 41 reads 'Terrace Buildings'. The rear stone elevations feature windows with voussoir heads, including tall, round-arched stair windows.

This represents a fine, early 19th-century urban terrace, built on a grand scale and retaining much of its original detail.
