Description
39 Salop Road is part of a terrace of four houses built around 1820 in Welshpool. The front is made of brick, while the rear features local roughly coursed and squared rubble. The building has a slate roof with end wall and axial stacks and stands three storeys high. It includes a central four-window range for Nos 39 and 40, a separately roofed three-window range to the left for No 38, and a hipped roofed block slightly advanced to the right for No 41, all sharing similar architectural details.
No 38 has a central entrance featuring a six-panelled door with panelled rebates, flanked by late 19th-century canted bay windows that are connected by a continuous pentice roof supported by chamfered posts on either side of the doorway. Above, there are 12-pane sash windows (the one over the doorway is painted blind) and 6-paned windows in the attic storey. Nos 39 and 40 share paired entrances, with a four-panelled door for No 39 and a part-glazed panelled door for No 40, both featuring elliptical heads and traceried fanlights. No 41 has a similar doorway to the left. The flanking windows are 12-pane sashes with flat arched gauged brick heads, and the upper windows throughout have a similar style, with 6-panes in the attic storey. A continuous painted sill band runs across the terrace below the first-floor windows. There is also an inscribed stone tablet on No 41 that reads 'Terrace Buildings'. The stone rear elevations have voussoir headed windows, including tall round-arched stair windows.
This terrace is a fine example of early 19th-century urban architecture, built on an ambitious scale and retaining much of its original high-quality detailing.
