Description

38-41 Salop Road, Welshpool, comprises a terrace of four houses built around 1820. The houses are constructed with a brick front and a rear of roughly coursed and squared rubble stone. They have slate roofs with end and axial chimney stacks. The terrace is three storeys high and consists of a central four-window range (covering numbers 39 and 40), a separately roofed three-window range to the left (number 38), and a hipped roof block slightly advanced to the right (number 41), although all have similar detailing. Number 38 has a central entrance with a six-panelled door, featuring panelled rebates, flanked by late 19th-century canted bay windows which are linked by a continuous pentice roof supported by chamfered posts on either side of the doorway. Above the doorway, there are 12-pane sash windows, with the lower panes painted over. The attic storey features six-paned windows. Numbers 39-40 have paired entrances, with a four-panelled door to number 39, a part-glazed, panelled door to number 40, both under elliptical heads with traceried fanlights. A similar doorway is present at number 41. Flanking windows are 12-pane sashes with flat-arched gauged brick heads. The upper windows throughout are similar, with six panes in the attic storey. A continuous painted sill band runs below the first-floor windows. An inscribed stone tablet on number 41 reads ‘Terrace Buildings’. The rear stone elevations feature voussoir headed windows, including tall, round-arched stair windows. This is a fine early 19th-century urban terrace, built on a large scale, and retaining much of its original high-quality detailing.
