Description

The Collen Buildings comprise a terrace of three houses, likely built around 1860, after 1854. They are located at 33-35 Salop Road, Welshpool. The houses are constructed of brick with stone angle quoins, and have a slate roof with two brick axial stacks and a gable end stack on the right-hand side. They are three storeys high, with a three-window front to each house. Each house has a four-panelled door with a shallow segmental overlight set within an ornate moulded case featuring a depressed arched head and a fluted keystone. The ground and first floors have four-pane sash windows, while the attic storey has twelve-pane sashes, all with flat arched rendered heads.

The front gardens are enclosed by cast-iron railings and gates, featuring cusped arrowhead rails in two tiers and a stone plinth wall. These contribute to the group value of the buildings.

The terrace is a well-detailed and representative example of urban housing, retaining much of its original character and forming part of a larger group. A map of Welshpool, produced in 1854 for the purposes of the Public Health Act, held at the National Library of Wales, provides context for the building's origins.
