Description
36 and 37 Salop Road in Welshpool were built around 1800 as a pair of houses. They are constructed of brick and topped with a slate roof, featuring paired stacks on each gable wall. The buildings rise three stories and have a three-window range, with blind central windows positioned above the paired entrances. Each entrance has a six-panelled door with overlights, framed by moulded architraves that include fluted capitals and panelled rebates. The windows are 12-pane sash style, with finely gauged brick heads above them.
In front of the houses, there are contemporary cast-iron railings that feature two tiers of rails, topped with leaf finials and urn finials on the gate posts. The decorative cast-iron gates include segmental bracing in the upper panel and diamond bracing below. A local rubble stone wall forms the boundary to the east yard of the houses.
This pair of houses is an excellent example of early 19th-century urban architecture, showcasing detailed design and retaining its original character.
