Description

This is a row of thirteen terrace houses built in the early 19th century and altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The houses are constructed from limestone ashlar, with some areas painted or rendered, and have slate roofs. The terrace has a slight step down between numbers 23 and 24. Each house originally had a double roof with an internal gutter, and number 23 retains an original deep gabled wing to the rear. Brick or ashlar stacks are located on the right-hand gable of each house.

The houses are two storeys high and have two windows on the front. Originally, each house had twelve-pane sash windows on the upper floor and a tripartite four:eight:four pane sash window below, all set into sunken panels. A similar tripartite sash window was originally located underneath a three-pane transom light, above the front door which has two vertical panels with rounded heads. The tripartite sashes were distinguished by thin colonnette mullions. Numbers 21, 22, 26 and 27 retain a significant amount of original features. A broad, moulded cornice runs across the front, above the first-floor windows which follow the sunken panel design and continue as blind segmental arches in the blocking course. The left-hand gable end is plain, while the rear elevation has mostly replacement sashes and various later additions.

Variations to the front include replacement windows in original openings, and replacement doors to all except numbers 18, 19, 21, 22 and 24. Numbers 17, 20 and 23 have brick stacks, while numbers 18, 19 and 25 have rendered frontages.

The interiors were not inspected, with the exception of numbers 23 and 27, which were investigated by Bath Council in 1990 and 1993 respectively. Number 23 contains a Regency hob grate on the first floor and Doric newel posts on the staircase. Number 27 also retains a Doric newel post on the stairs and a Regency hob grate on the first floor. This is a notable terrace that would be significantly enhanced by the installation of replacement windows with glazing bars.
