Description

This listing describes a terrace of 21 houses located on Canning Street, built in the 1830s. The houses are constructed from brick with stone dressings and feature a slate roof. Each house is three storeys tall with a basement, generally consisting of three bays, although Nos. 18 and 20, as well as those on Catharine Street, have five bays. Nos. 26/28 and 38/40 project forward under pediments.

Architectural details include a basement lintel band, a first-floor sill band, and a top frieze cornice with a blocking course. The windows have wedge lintels and are sashed with glazing bars, with one blind window on the second floor of each house. The entrances are adorned with Ionic porches, with paired porches for Nos. 26/28, 32/34, and 38/40, and feature two-panel doors.

Iron railings with decorative heads enclose the areas and steps. Nos. 18 and 20 have some blind windows on the ground and first floors, while the return of No. 18 includes a two-storey canted bay. Nos. 38 to 48 have a first-floor iron balcony that projects over the porches, and the first three bays form a return to No. 156 Bedford Street South, which also has a first-floor iron balcony.
