Description
Pendarves Lodge is a mid-to-late 19th-century gate lodge built for the Pendarves family estate. It is constructed of snecked killas stone with granite dressings, and has a slate roof. The lodge has a T-shaped plan, comprising a three-unit main range with a projecting wing in the centre. It is two storeys high and built in a Jacobean style, with a chamfered plinth, chamfered mullion windows, and chamfered doorways. The projecting wing is slightly higher than the main range and features a canted front, reminiscent of a tollhouse, with three two-light windows on each floor, and a drip mould above the ground-floor windows. The wing has a hipped roof and an extruded chimney stack in its right-hand sidewall. The principal entrance is located in the angle to the left of the wing, sheltered by a porch with a catslide roof, featuring a sturdy timber frame on a chamfered stone wall and a central door. To the right of the wing, the main range has a two-light window at ground floor, with a carved shield above—an eagle surrounded by three three-point stars. The left gable has one window on each floor, with three and then two lights, while the right gable has a doorway and a two-light window on each floor. At the rear, there is a one-light window at ground floor and a two-light stair window above, flanked by extruded chimney stacks. The ground floor of the wing was designed as a room, separate from the main domestic quarters to the rear, possibly for the temporary reception of visitors to Pendarves House. The lodge was built to control access to the north drive of the Pendarves estate.
