Description
Penponds Methodist Church, originally a Bible Christians Chapel, was built in 1844, as indicated by the date on the gable. The church features a gabled facade made of snecked killas with granite quoins, while the sides and rear are constructed from slobbered and painted uncoursed rubble, topped with a slate roof. It is a small, rectangular building with its gable facing the road and stands two storeys high. The gabled facade includes two tall round-headed 18-pane sashed windows with radiating glazing bars and painted brick heads, along with a granite datestone that reads "BIBLE CHRISTIANS CHAPEL. 1844."
On the south side, there is a gabled porch that is offset to the right, featuring a doorway on its front wall and a lancet window in its gable wall. In front of the porch, there is a wooden notice board designed as an Ionic aedicule with fluted colonettes and an open pediment decorated with egg-and-dart motifs. The rear of the porch has two tall 18-pane sashed windows, while the north side wall has two similar windows positioned oppositely.
Attached to the rear of the church, at a slightly lower level, is a small Sunday School that includes a doorway on its south side and one 4-pane sashed window on each side. The interior of the church is small and has seen little alteration. It features a gallery at the east end supported by two cast-iron Tuscan columns, with an ornamental iron openwork balustrade, accessible via a quarter-turn staircase at the south end. There is a basket-arched choir gallery at the east end, which originally housed a hand-pumped organ, with the pump handle still in place. The rostrum is adorned with turned balusters, and the benches have painted oval metal numbers on the ends, along with umbrella brackets. A small Sunday School room extends into the space, supported by two iron columns, with the raked rear end of the choir gallery projecting into it. This simple building reflects the characteristics of its period.
