Description
Polstrong House is a house built in the early, mid, and late 19th century. It features rendered uncoursed rubble and a slate roof, with an L-shaped plan consisting of a double-depth range in three sections from right to left, and a receding wing at the left end. The house has two storeys and a facade with two, three, and one bays, where the centre section projects forward. It is situated on a low terrace with a full-width balustrade.
The entrance is located in the second bay, accessed by four steps leading up from the terrace. It has a recessed porch supported by two Doric columns and a banded surround with a cornice. To the left of the entrance, there is a tall French window with a floating cornice on consoles, and above it are two 9-pane sash windows. The central section features 12-pane sashes with similar floating cornices at the ground floor and 9-pane sashes above. The third section has a 9-pane sash window on each floor, with the lower window having a banded surround that matches the porch. The roof is hipped with projecting eaves.
Attached to the left return wall is a two-storey aisled conservatory designed by Silvanus Trevail for J.R. Daniell. Inside, the drawing room in the left wing is decorated and furnished in a style that has changed little since the late 19th century, while the rest of the interior is not of special interest.
