Description
Penponds Church Institute and Chapel House is a Church of England Infants School built in 1849. It features uncoursed killas rubble with granite quoins and dressings, topped with slate roofs. The building has a rectangular plan and is a single storey. The asymmetrical facade of the Institute consists of three bays but has four windows. It includes a doorway in the left bay with a modern board door and shallow overlight, along with tall 18-pane sashed windows with exposed boxes—one to the left of the door, two in the centre, and one in the right-hand bay. There is a chimney at the right-hand gable. The Chapel House, which continues to the right, is lower and has four bays, featuring a doorway in the first bay (abutting the junction) and three 12-pane sashed windows, also with exposed boxes, along with a chimney at the right-hand gable. The rear and interior have not been inspected. This building was constructed on the site of Mrs Percival's Endowed School of 1761, which is mentioned on a wall monument in the Church of St Martin and St Meriadocus on Church Street. It is included for its group value with Ivy Cottage to the left and Trevithick's Cottage opposite.
