Description
Trevithick's Cottage, also known as Higher Penponds Farm Cottage, is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates from the 18th century and has undergone some alterations. The building is constructed of whitewashed killas rubble and brick, topped with a thatched roof and featuring brick chimneys. The layout is L-shaped, consisting of a two-unit main range with a stable attached at the right end and a short rear wing to the left. It has two low storeys and two bays, with a symmetrical façade. The central doorway is protected by a modern gabled porch, and there are two square windows on each floor, each with six panes and lay bars only. Gable chimneys are present. The stable, which continues to the right, is made of killas and granite rubble with a slate roof and features a central doorway with a loading door above it. On the left gable wall of the house, there is a bronze plaque at the first floor level that commemorates the engineer Richard Trevithick, who lived here from 1771 to 1833. The rear of the building has a modern lean-to addition at the angle with the wing. Inside, the parlour to the right of the door is fully panelled, featuring a dado of horizontal boards, a dado rail, and vertical boarding with moulded muntins. The fireplace has an architrave that includes fluted columns, and there is a basket-arched alcove with a keystone. The kitchen to the left has a rectangular fireplace with a timber lintel. The property is now managed by the National Trust.
