Description
The Old Mill is a water-powered corn mill, now used as a store, likely built in the early 19th century and has undergone alterations. It is constructed from uncoursed granite rubble with granite quoins and dressings, topped with a slate roof. The building has a rectangular plan oriented east-west, featuring four storeys and three symmetrical bays. The central doorway on the ground floor is complemented by a loading door directly above it, with two windows on each of these floors and three on each of the upper floors. Most windows are square, except for those on the top floor which are lower, and all have raised sills and altered glazing. Each opening is framed with quoined surrounds and rectangular lintels. The roof is half-hipped.
On the left side, a ramp with a rubble retaining wall connects higher ground to a doorway on the first floor, although a modern concrete block garage has been built over the ramp, obscuring the doorway. There is also a window on the top floor. The right-hand end wall features a ground floor doorway and windows on the first and third floors, along with an added garage. At the rear, there is a narrow wheel-pit for a missing water wheel and remnants of the millrace. The interior includes timber beams and flooring, although part has been demolished, along with a grain shoot and grindstones. This mill represents an unusually complete example of its type in the area.
