Description
Castle Mill is a corn mill built in 1818, now used as a farm building. It is constructed from sandstone rubble and has a slate roof. The building has two and three storeys. The north-west wall features a 20th-century lean-to on the left. To the right, there are two bays with sashed windows that have plain stone surrounds on the first and second floors. On the ground floor, there is a two-light window with a plain stone surround, square mullion, and glazing bars. To the left of this window is a door with a plain stone surround. On the right side, the stone walls support a 34½-foot-diameter, 4-foot-wide pitchback water wheel, which has wooden buckets, rim drive, and metal arms and tie bars. At the rear, there is a wide barn entrance at first floor level, accessible by a ramp, along with a wing that contains a drying kiln. The interior is reported to have complete mill machinery, including mill wheels.
