Description
Fell End Farmhouse is a house from the early 18th century, with some remains from the 17th century. It is constructed of sandstone rubble and has a stone slate roof. The building is designed in an L-shape, consisting of two separate blocks that touch at their corners. It has two storeys and an attic.
The front block, which faces south-west, features two bays with flush chamfered mullioned windows. The left bay has a two-light window, although the ground-floor mullion has been removed, while the right bay also has a two-light window. There are gable chimneys present. The rear wall of the front block overlaps the gable wall of the rear block, allowing for an internal doorway between the two. The gable of the rear block has blocked openings, and the presence of keyed stonework suggests that the unusual layout is due to a history of rebuilding and demolition on the site.
On the north-east facing rear wall of the front block, there is a door on the left with a chamfered surround and a lintel inscribed with 'IT 1660'. To the right, there is a lean-to in the inner angle with the rear wing, which has a doorway featuring a cyma-moulded surround and a lintel inscribed with 'RMT 1719'. The south-east wall of the rear wing has two bays with three-light mullioned windows that are flush chamfered, except for the right-hand window on the first floor, which is rebated and chamfered. The left bay on the ground floor is blank. The gable wall has a two-light rebated and chamfered cellar window, with two similar windows at intermediate levels above it. The attic features a three-light window. The north-west wall of the rear block has a three-light flush chamfered mullioned window on both floors, with the lower one having extended mullions.
Inside, the front block is in a derelict condition, with the first floor and part of the roof covering missing. It contains a moulded shouldered fireplace and one truss with a tie beam and queen struts. The rear wing has a shouldered fireplace with a cornice mantel, and its two trusses have curved principals without collars.
