Description
Burton Mill is a water-powered corn mill, likely built around 1800, though it incorporates earlier elements. The structure is made of sandstone rubble and has a tiled roof. It stands three storeys tall with a basement.
On the south-east wall, there is a gabled projection on the left side featuring a first-floor doorway with plain reveals. To the right of this projection, there are doorways on both the ground and first floors. Further right, a weatherboarded gabled hoist chamber extends from the upper storey. The left gable wall includes a window on the right with plain reveals, as well as windows on each upper storey that have segmental brick arches, and a ground floor doorway with a similar arch. The right gable wall mirrors this design, with one window at basement level and two windows each on the ground and first floors. An iron overshot wheel with a timber penstock control box projects from this wall. The rear wall consists of two bays, and a straight joint indicates that some masonry is from an earlier building.
Inside, the mill retains machinery, including two millstones, shafts, grain chutes, winnowing machines, and hoists. The roof trusses feature bolted king-posts that rise from collars, with interrupted tie-beams at wall head level connected to angled braces that extend from the floor to meet the principals.
