Description
Burton Court is a house dating from the early to mid-18th century, with later additions. It is constructed of sandstone rubble, with a brick facade featuring ashlar dressings. The roof is hipped and slate-covered. The house presents a symmetrical design with two storeys and an attic, encompassing five bays. Chamfered quoins and a modillion cornice are prominent features. The three central bays project forward, topped by a pediment flanked by chamfered quoins. Basement windows with segmental heads are set within the sandstone plinth, except for the central bay. The first-floor windows have segmental gauged brick heads with keystones, and contain sash windows with glazing bars. A Diocletian window sits within the pediment. Single-storey wings extend to either side of the main facade, incorporating parapets; the right-hand wing has a canted projection containing a sash window with a round head and Gothic glazing. To the right of this is the current doorway, situated within a doorcase which was extensively renewed around 1960. Chimneys are positioned to the right and left of the main block. The rear of the house appears to date from approximately 1800 and consists of three bays. A ground-floor arcade of round arches, now infilled and containing sashed windows, is present, the original purpose of which is unknown. The interior contains an oak dog-leg staircase with an open string, three turned balusters to each tread, and a ramped handrail.
