Description
This is a group of six tomb chests located immediately south of the chancel of the Church of St Mary, dating from the mid-18th century to the early 19th century. They are made of sandstone. The north-western tomb has a flat moulded top and scrolled ends, featuring carved decorations that include flaming lamps and a cartouche with an illegible inscription. To the east, there is a tomb with square baluster ends, which bears the inscription: "George Bonnor of Ecceswall ..... died ..... 1779". Among the two middle tombs, the eastern one has square baluster corners and is adorned with swags and scrolls, with three angels and a crown carved on one end. Its inscription reads: "George Bonnor late of Eccleswall ..... died ..... 1748". The western middle tomb includes the inscription: "George Bonnor of Woodend ..... died ..... 1803". The two southern tombs also have square baluster corners; the western one has the inscription "James Bonnor ..... 1814", while the eastern one has an illegible inscription.
