Description
This is an 18th or early 19th century threshing barn located in Upton Bishop. The barn is constructed of coursed rubble with chiseled blocks forming quoins at the corners, and has a plain tile gabled roof.
The exterior features central double winnowing doors positioned near the centre of both longer sides. Slit breathers are situated on either side; two bays are present at the north-west end, and three at the south-east end. The north-west gable end incorporates three ranks of similar breathers, including two in the gable itself, along with a loft door and owl hole near the top of the wall. The south-east gable end has a comparable arrangement, but without the loft door.
Inside, the roof structure includes three trusses with ties and collars. Two ranks of staggered and trenched purlins are also present. The common rafters appear to be original and pit-sawn. The double winnowing doors on the longer sides have been replaced, and one upper leaf has been covered with corrugated metal sheeting. A threshing floor has been created between the double doors, paved with stone slabs.
The barn is designated at Grade II for its status as a largely intact example of an 18th century threshing barn. Buildings of this date and type are now rare in such original condition, and the barn contributes significantly to a cohesive group with the farmhouse, cider house, and attached barn at Marsh Farm.
