Description

Upton Court is a farmhouse with a core dating back to the 14th century, which has been largely remodeled in the late 16th century, with further alterations in the 17th century, and additional remodeling during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, along with 20th-century changes. The original timber-framed core has been mostly refaced and replaced with sandstone rubble, and the roof is now tiled from the 20th century. The building features a hall range that is aligned north-east to south-west, with a late 16th-century cross-wing at the south-west end. The through-passage has been obscured by later modifications, and there is a gable-end stack to the hall and a lateral stack to the cross-wing. There are 20th-century additions to the rear that run parallel to the hall range, as well as minor additions to the south-east front.

The south-east front has two storeys, with the gable end of the cross-wing on the left, which includes a 4-light and transomed 19th-century casement window. To the right, there are three 2-light casement windows in the hall range, a 20th-century porch and door to the left of center, an enlarged 20th-century window, and a 20th-century French casement to the right. There is also a single-storey later addition further to the right. A 4-light stone mullioned window is preserved on the south-west return of the cross-wing, and some fragmentary herringbone framing can be seen in the gable end at the rear of the cross-wing.

Inside, the building has been largely altered in the 20th century but retains a five-bay smoke-blackened roof from the 14th-century hall range. This roof features collar and tie-beam trusses with a moulded ridge and principals that are cusped above the collar level. The trusses appear to have been modified later with the addition of swept braces to the collar-beam, and one truss still retains a section of cusping below the collar. It seems that the 14th-century block originally extended further to the south. Upton Court is listed as Grade II* due to the significance of its roof structure. The paneling in the south-west room, as noted by the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments, has been removed.
