Description

Castle End is a house dating from the 17th century, featuring a north range with an added west range from around 1730. The building is constructed of sandstone rubble, squared at the front, and has a hipped slate roof. It stands two storeys high with a cellar and consists of seven bays. The windows are boxed sashes with glazing bars and flat stone arches, and there are three gabled timber attic dormers. The central bay features a door with an architrave. There are red brick chimneys on both the right and left sides of the house. The north wall of the rear wing has timber cross-windows with leaded casements, along with two single-storey bay windows that have similar glazing.

Inside, the house retains many notable features, especially in the west range. These include several rooms with fielded panelling and a chimneypiece in the central ground floor room that has a Delft tile surround, Ionic half-columns, and a pulvinated oak leaf frieze. The main staircase is made of oak with an open string, three turned balusters on each tread, and a ramped handrail. There is a second staircase of late 17th century style, featuring a closed string and turned balusters. The attic contains an extensive survival of the roof structure, along with several 17th century panelled doors.

Historically, this house was originally owned by the Dukes of Kent and passed to the Nourse family in the early 18th century. The enlargement and modernization of the house were likely carried out for the Bristol merchant Philip Nourse, who retired here until his death in 1742.
