Description

South Lodge, along with its wall and gate-piers, dates from the mid-19th century and is constructed of snecked stone with a slate roof. The lodge is situated on the south side of the gateway to Hunton Court and features a cross-plan layout. The west gable end is connected to the center of a curved wall that extends south from the gate-piers.

The lodge is a single-storey building set on a stone plinth, with pilaster strips at the corners of each gable end; those on the west side continue into the wall. The roof extends beyond the eaves, and there are projecting stone stacks at the north-east and south-west re-entrant angles. Each gable end has a tall two-light latticed casement window, which is framed by a raised tooled stone architrave with a cambered head, a keystone, and a consoled cill. The long side of each wing features smaller chamfered two-light casement windows.

There is a stone porch located in the north-west re-entrant angle, covered by a lean-to roof that extends from the north wing. The porch has a round-arched doorway to the north, with plain imposts and keystones, leading to a panelled inner door. The interior has not been inspected.

The wall surrounding the lodge is approximately 4 feet 6 inches high, built on a stone plinth, and topped with cambered ashlar coping. There are two slightly taller piers with cushioned tops flanking the gable end of the lodge, and a pair of even taller gate-piers with bulbous corniced stone caps.
