Description

The South Lodge with gates and gatepiers at Manderston House dates from the mid-19th century, before 1857, with some later alterations and additions. This single-storey lodge is located next to the gates and gatepiers and is constructed from stugged squared and snecked sandstone, featuring polished ashlar dressings and a base course.

On the southeast elevation, the lodge has two bays. The right bay contains a round-arched window, while the left bay is advanced and features a bipartite round-arched window that is set even further forward. There is a set-back half-piended porch addition to the left, which has a round-arched panelled door.

The southwest elevation has three bays, with a central advanced porch that includes a narrow round-arched window next to the southwest door on the return to the southeast. Each of the flanking bays has a round-arched window.

The northwest elevation also has two bays, with a round-arched window in the left bay. The right bay is advanced and features a bipartite round-arched window that is set even further forward. There is a set-back porch addition to the southwest, which has a narrow round-arched window, and a platform-roofed addition to the outer left with a panelled round-arched window to the right.

On the northeast elevation, there are windows in each bay of the platform-roofed addition. The lodge features timber sash and case windows with gothic tracery in the upper sash of the broader windows. The roof is slate-covered and piended, with a two-shafted ashlar coped stack at the apex.

The gates, gatepiers, and railings consist of ornate double gates at the center with gilt detailing, flanked by rusticated square-plan ashlar gatepiers that have a base course, string course, and an entablature with crimped coping and pyramidal caps. There are quadrant dwarf walls on either side with ornate cast-iron railings, which also feature gilt detailing, and the square-plan rusticated gatepiers are detailed similarly.
