Description

The gate lodge at 25 Greenfield Avenue in Ayr dates from the mid 19th century and features later additions. This single-storey building is designed with Jacobean details and has a gabled roof made of squared sandstone. It includes a base course and finials on the gables.

On the northeast elevation, there is an advanced gabled entrance porch on the outer left with a timber door and a square plaque at the gablehead. Flanking finials are present at the skew bases, along with a gablehead finial. To the right, there is a single window in the re-entrant angle, and an advanced blank elevation to the left. A bipartite window is located in the gabled bay, and another bipartite window is found on the outer right, topped by a shield at the gablehead.

The southeast elevation features a timber gate on the outer left that leads to a later extension. There is a single window in the bay to the left and an advanced gable to the right, which has a stone-roofed canted bay and a plaque at the gablehead.

The southwest elevation is asymmetrical, showcasing a crowstepped gabled bay to the right with an off-centre window on the ground floor and a plaque at the gablehead. Modern additions are attached to the left.

The northwest elevation was not visible in 1999. The lodge has a variety of glazing patterns in its timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and features kneelers at the skews on the northeast elevation and crowstepped skews on the southwest elevation. There are diagonally shafted stacks with polygonal cans.

The interior was not seen in 1999. The property also includes square-plan, chamfered gatepiers, low boundary wing walls, and decorative iron screens. A rubble and brick wall encloses the remainder of the site, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods.
