Description

Southover is a house that dates from the early 16th century or earlier, with alterations made in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. It features a timber-framed structure, with the ground floor constructed of red and grey brick in Flemish bond and the first floor tile-hung. The roof is covered with plain tiles and is built at right angles to the lane.

The house has an open hall consisting of two unequal-length timber-framed bays. The right end bay is missing its storeyed section, while the central area of the left end of the right hall bay was converted into a smoke bay in the later 16th century. The storeyed left end section was rebuilt and extended in the 18th century. The building has two storeys and a garret, standing on a brick plinth, with the base of the tile-hanging lower to the left of the door and the exposed base of the principal post to the right of the door. It features a half-hipped roof with a central brick ridge stack located in the left hall bay.

The fenestration is irregular, consisting of three 2-light casements. There is a boarded door situated under a small open gabled porch beneath the stack. A 19th-century rear lean-to is also present. Inside, the house displays exposed framing and a crown-post roof in the right section, along with evidence of the smoke bay. The building was formerly known as Grove Farm Cottage.
