Description

The lodge, walls, and piers to Bathwick Hill House date from around 1840 and were designed by HE Goodridge. The lodge is constructed of limestone ashlar with a slate roof. It has a main entrance facing the entrance gates and a secondary front facing Bathwick Hill. It is two storeys high and features plain sash windows with square brackets to the sills, set within broad plat surrounds to the mullions and jambs. The entrance front has a panelled door and transom light with a two-light sash above, a deep platband running above the door and window, and a sill band. A deep stone eaves cornice sits on brackets, with coped gables forming open pediments. The front to Bathwick Hill is similarly detailed with a two-light mullioned sash window at each level, topped by an open pediment. A slightly set-back wing has a return gable over a two-light window, and to the right is a garage with a mid platband carried across as a parapet. There is a large ridge stack with a heavy capping. The interior has not been inspected. A short flight of steps leads to a landing containing a balustrade with slightly cusped narrow openings, to two square piers and a stopped end pier. A retaining wall runs from the rear of the lodge, featuring a central panelled pier and a balustrade approximately 1.7 metres high. This wall stops at one of a pair of large gate piers with moulded bases and panelled faces, topped with cross-pedimented cappings on deep block brackets. The wrought-iron gates are 20th century. An outer pier has a quadrant of wall with swept down coping, stopping at a square channelled pier on a high base; a similar pier, without the base, is located at the corner of the lodge, encompassing a stone-paved courtyard.
