Description
BATHWICK HILL (South side) Ornamental Garden Fountain (Formerly ornamental Flower Bed) South of Oakwood and Bathwick Tower
11/02/85
GV II
A raised square fountain (possibly a former flower bed) in stone ashlar with concave central quadrants to each side, c1m in height, with rounded copings set flush, enclosed by a quatrefoil shaped outer retaining wall, again c1m in height and with rounded copings set flush (restored in the early 1990s).
HISTORY: The feature was probably introduced in c1833-35, as part of the improvements to the villa and garden by the architect Edward Davis (c1802-1852), a pupil of John Soane. In the early 1990s, it was restored and it is now in use as a fountain.
REASONS FOR DESIGNATION: The fountain or former flower bed south of Oakwood and Bathwick Tower is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
- It is a good example of an early-C19 Italianate style garden feature associated with the architect Edward Davis (c.1802-1852)
- It forms an important group of early-C19 garden features associated with Oakwood and Bathwick Tower (qv), an early-C19 Italianate villa.
- It makes an important contribution to the interest of Oakwood and Bathwick Tower (qv) and its landscaped garden.
