Description
BATHWICK HILL (South side) Garden Bridge West of Oakwood and Bathwick Tower (Formerly listed as Garden Bridge West of Oakwood)
11/02/85
GV II
An early C19 Italianate style garden bridge, spanning a small ravine with a cascade linking two ponds situated in the landscaped garden of an early C19 villa, now known as Oakwood and Bathwick Tower (qv). The single span bridge is built in limestone ashlar and has pierced parapets and abutments, matching those of the terrace immediately south and west of Oakwood and Bathwick Tower and to those used on the balcony on the west elevation of the villa.
HISTORY It was probably built as part of improvements to the villa and garden in circa 1833-35 by the architect Edward Davis, a pupil of John Soane.
REASONS FOR DESIGNATION The garden bridge west of Oakwood and Bathwick Tower merits listing at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
- It is a good example of an early-C19 Italianate style garden bridge associated with the architect Edward Davis (c1802-1852).
- It forms part of an important group of early-C19 garden features associated with the Italianate villa known as Oakwood and Bathwick Tower (qv).
- It makes an important contribution to the interest of Oakwood and Bathwick Tower (qv) and its landscaped garden.
