Description

A planned group of farm buildings dating from the mid to late 19th century, constructed of roughly-coursed granite rubble with granite dressings and dry Delabole slate roofs with gable ends. The buildings follow an overall U-shaped plan. Originally, there were L-shaped barns on the left, with a slightly later single-storey extension forming cartsheds in front on the left. A shippon or shelter shed is on the right, and it links to an implement shed, piggery, swill kitchen, loose box, and earth closet that return at right angles in front of the right-hand side. The larger barn on the left is built into the bank. Behind the left-hand side of the adjoining barn is a single-storey possible horse-engine house. A 20th-century lean-to is attached to the left of the larger barn. Each of the two similar barns adjoining at the left-hand angle has central threshing floors.

The barns are two stories high, with the remaining buildings being single-storey. The external elevations are virtually unaltered, retaining many original doors and shuttered windows to original openings. The south front has a symmetrical two-window front barn on the left and a single-storey range on the right. The front of the barn and the front of the barn returning on its left (east front) are identical, both featuring central doorways with loading/winnowing doorways above. These loading doorways and the rear doorways opposite are covered by hipped-roofed slate hoods carried on moulded granite cotbels. The left-hand window of the south-facing barn has been converted into a doorway. The single-storey range on the right has four doorways at the front. The left-hand range of barns has an east-facing front. To the left of the described two-window front is an internal linking bay with a doorway and window above. Further left is a symmetrical two-window front with a central doorway and a loading doorway above; the first-floor windows are higher than those of the other two-storey fronts. The single-storey cartshed, on the left, which was originally open-fronted, now has 20th-century infill. The range at right angles in front of the right-hand side has a west front, with three open-fronted bays, the wallplate carried on two granite monolithic piers. To the right of this is the piggery front, with three low doorways, followed by a doorway and window fronting the swill kitchen. At the far right is a lower single-storey building with two doorways. The interior retains the original first-floor structure in the barns, as well as the original roof structures.
