Description

Kernick House is a small country house dating from the early 19th century, located in Penryn. The house is constructed of rubble and painted rubble, with slatehanging to the front, and has a hipped roof covered in asbestos slate. It follows a double-depth plan with later extensions to the left and a parallel outbuilding to the rear. The front facade has two storeys and one window at the entrance. Original 12-pane hornless sash windows remain, along with a smaller window to the first floor. A plastered stuccoed porch with a moulded entablature and a central fanlight is located on the left-hand side, containing a doorway on its return. The front door is a six-panel design with the top four panels glazed. A mid-19th century single-storey extension sits to the left of the porch, featuring a pair of original glazed doors with margin panes. The right-hand return facade has a two-window garden front with original sash windows. The rear elevation retains some original sash windows alongside more recent replacements. The outbuilding at the rear is topped with a louvred bellcote and a tented roof. The interior of the house preserves its original architectural details, including an open-well open-string staircase, moulded and carved ceiling cornices, panelled doors and moulded architraves. A rear courtyard wall, with a string below the coping, features battlements to the central part and two pointed-arched doorways with old planked doors.
