Description
These farm buildings, located approximately 25 meters north of Penelewey Barton Farmhouse, date from the early to mid-19th century. They are constructed from slatestone rubble with granite quoins, sills, and some jambstones, featuring shallow brick arches and half-hipped scantle slate roofs. The buildings form a U-shaped group around a yard, with a deeper and taller central barn that includes a shippon beneath it. Flanking barns on the left and right contain a waggon store under the left-hand (south) barn and a shippon under the right-hand barn.
At either end of the group, there are single-storey buildings on two levels due to the sloping ground. The left (south) range serves as stabling, while the right (north) range is likely for loose boxes. The lower building on the right has an outshut within the yard. The two-storey east front of the main range features a symmetrical arrangement with a slightly projecting two-window barn in the center and three-window barns on either side. The central barn has a doorway with an old ventilated door and a larger loading doorway above it, which has 20th-century doors. Ground floor windows are fitted with slatted ventilators, while the first-floor windows retain their original two-light shutters.
The barn on the right has a symmetrical grouping of openings, including a central doorway and original ventilators and shutters similar to those of the main barn. The left barn features two wide ground floor openings. The flanking buildings at right angles to the front mostly maintain their original doorway and window openings. Although the interiors have not been inspected, this farm group remains very intact, showcasing 19th-century planning with good local materials and retaining original floors, roofs, and much of their original roof covering.
