Description

The Belvedere and attached garden walls to Westhill, located on West Street in Penryn, date from the early 19th century and mid to late 19th century. The high garden walls are constructed of local rubble and some cob, featuring scantle slate copings and red clay ridge tiles, including one 17th-century crested tile. The belvedere is positioned at the angle of L-plan walls, which extend approximately 83 meters to the northeast and 22 meters to the southeast.

The belvedere itself is made of granite rubble with brick arches and a first-floor sill string. It has a pyramidal dry Delabole slate roof with exposed rafter ends at the eaves. The building has a small square plan, with a first-floor observatory above the ground floor, accessible by a staircase. It is designed in a simple Italianate style and has two storeys, with each elevation featuring three round-arched lights on the first floor. The right-hand (north) return has surviving 2-pane casements. The ground floor includes a segmental-arched doorway on the left side of the east front and a small window opening on the right-hand return. The interior is virtually complete, featuring a straight-flight staircase and boarded walls and ceiling on the first floor.
